Meet the Artisans

COVID19 changed all our lives. Washington State’s mandates made the art of musical theater impossible. The 5th was forced to cancel its entire season, affecting the livelihoods of actors, musicians, technicians, designers and more. Through our current digital season, The Essential 5th Collection, we are able to create employment opportunities but not to the same capacity as before. Our Artisan Marketplace is a way to support our core staff artisans during this time.

All items in the Artisan Marketplace category were made by the below artisans, and all proceeds of the items sold in the Artisan Marketplace category will go directly to the artisan who made them.

Patricia “Patti” Emmert primarily sells her custom crocheted hats backstage at the various Seattle theatres that she does Costume and Wardrobe work for, but because of the theatre closures she is now selling her hats from her home. Patti is incredibly grateful to The 5th Avenue Theatre for the opportunity to share her hats with you.

Her hats feature hand dyed and rare yarns from all over the world. The yarns are primarily cotton, silk, alpaca and rayon fibers, making them soft and comfortable. Patti designs and patterns her hats herself, making them truly unique and one of a kind. Patti draws her inspiration and color combinations from nature and its beautiful color palette.

Patti's items are 2001A - 2001O on the Holiday Bazaar bidding page.

Jeanna Gomez moved to Seattle in 1999 to work at ACT Theatre. Since then she has worked in costume crafts for Seattle Opera and ACT Theatre but found her home at The 5th Avenue Theatre in 2013 as Master Crafts Artisan. Master Crafts specializes in hat making, accessories, dyeing, painting, and distressing of costumes for the stage. Jeanna loves the collaborative aspects of her job, working with designers, performers, the Sound and Hair Departments, and of course, her team-mates in The 5th Avenue Theatre costume shop.  Jeanna works with Regional Animal Services of King County fostering rescue kittens.

Tristan Hansen has been working for the production department at The 5th Avenue Theatre for 10+ years and is the current Production Prop Master. She has crafted and created on the side for many years making everything from jewelry, upholstery, embroidery, furniture restoration and everything in between. During the furlough she has busied herself with setting up her home shop/studio and expanding her craft arsenal to include epoxy resin crafts. She is the single  mother to an amazing kindergartener and couldn’t think of a better roommate to quarantine with than her favorite girl in the world, Miss Robin.

Christina Hughes feels mask-making is a way to let off creative steam and to experience the joy that comes from fashioning something both beautiful and useful. Christina came to mask-making through theatre. She studied makeup and costume design at Western Washington University and now works as an electrician at The 5th Avenue Theatre. If you see me in the spot booth (I’m the one knitting before the show) feel free to wave hello!

Christina's items are 2005A - 2005O on the Holiday Bazaar bidding page.

C. Luke Mathis grew up on a sailboat, touring Central America with his parents, and quickly learned that when something was broken you simply have to fix it or build a new one. At fourteen, he returned to the States and immersed himself in theatre throughout high school, college, and then in the Pacific Northwest theatre industry, where his make-it-fix-it philosophy came in handy. His scenic fabrication career has brought him opportunities as fixing the doors of the Seattle Monorail, creating interior mockups of the Boeing Dreamliner, two large-scale sculptures, and movie sets for Amazon Studios and Paramount. He started building for The 5th Avenue Theatre in 2007, and became Head Builder in 2012.

Luke's items are 2006A - 2006F on the Holiday Bazaar bidding page.

Jim Mathias is a Special Assistant Builder at The 5th Avenue Theatre.  The Builders do a variety of tasks for any given production.  Builders repair sets for touring productions, manufacture stage automation such as elevators, stage revolves and flying effects, and provide custom fabrication like stair cases, support structures and specialized rigging.  The Builders at The 5th are also tasked with specialized prop tricks, CO2 effects, fog effects and various infrastructure maintenance projects.

Jim joined The 5th family in 2017 with a strong background in theatrical rigging, scenic fabrication and fine art.  His best work on stage in never seen but keeps the gears of musical theatre well greased and ready for show call.

Jim is a degreed fine artist and musician with a passion for form and function and still practices fine art when not at work.  However, his greatest desire is to be back at work with his friends doing Seattles best live music theatre.

Shellie G. Moomey has been working as a Costume Engineer in the Seattle Theatre community for over twenty years.  Her work has graced stages at Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Opera, Seattle Repertory, The Intiman, The Children’s Theatre, ACT and most recently at The 5th Avenue Theatre.  She has loved Musical Theatre since she was small enough to take her fist ballet, tap and jazz dance class.  She lives on the island of West Seattle with her Husband and her amazing Daughter.

Shellie's items are 2008A - 2008N on the Holiday Bazaar bidding page.

Rachael Smith-Ferri (she/her) is a textile enthusiast who loves learning and exploring new techniques. She has had the wonderful honor of working as a stitcher at The 5th Avenue Theatre, as well as at Taproot Theatre and Seattle Rep. Outside of the theatre world, she enjoys wandering in the realms of embroidery (particularly counted thread), weaving, and historical garments, as well as spending time with her human and feline family.

Rachael's items are 2009A - 2009R on the Holiday Bazaar bidding page.

Ruthanne Swanson grew up outside of Chicago, inheriting creativity from both her parents. She learned sewing from her mom, a home seamstress, who made many of her clothes and costumes for school performances, while her dad, an amateur woodworker, built furniture and toys for her. She took the skills she learned at home and went on to become a theater professional. After starting her career at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2006, she also worked as a freelancer, designing and making costumes for theaters throughout Chicago’s theater scene and making custom bridal and special occasion dresses. Since moving to the Seattle area in 2019, she has worked with the fantastic costume team at The 5th Avenue Theatre on Austen’s Pride, Mrs. Doubtfire, Bliss, and Sister Act. While The COVID pandemic interrupted a great season at The 5th, the silver lining for Ruthanne has been spending more time with her best creation, her 2-year-old son, Stellan.

Ruthanne's items are 2010A - 2010H on the Holiday Bazaar bidding page.

Rachel Wilkie loves vintage and loves to reuse! I began this journey at a physical location in 2005. I had recently moved to Seattle, and was putting out feelers into ways to supplement my Costume Design and Acting incomes. A small local antiques store was looking for upcyled fashions designers for their shop, and I began consigning for them.

Since then, the store has closed, but I took my original upcycled designs and began my Etsy shop! As a costume designer, I'm out and about sourcing items for shows on a daily basis.  I enjoy finding lovely things and passing them on to new homes (or remaking them into something completely new!)

I’m happy to bring you a small collection of gift-worthy items from my Etsy shop!  Thanks so much for taking time to support small business arts shops this Christmas Season…

Rachel's items are 2011A - 2011X on the Holiday Bazaar bidding page.
